Understanding Hair Types

Introduction
Your hair is as unique as your fingerprint! Understanding your hair type is the first step to creating a personalised hair care routine that brings out the best in your locks. Hair types are determined by texture, porosity, density, and thickness, and knowing these details helps you pick the right maintenance techniques and products. Let’s explore the basics of identifying your hair type.
1. Hair Texture
Hair texture refers to the shape of your hair strand. It’s categorised into four types:
- Straight (Type 1): smooth, shiny, and tends to get oily quickly.
- Wavy (Type 2): Falls between straight and curly, with loose, S-shaped waves.
- Curly (Type 3): defined curls or ringlets that can be prone to dryness.
- Coily (Type 4): Tight curls or coils, often referred to as kinky, with a naturally dry texture.
Tip: Examine your hair’s natural state without styling or products to determine its texture.
2. Hair Porosity
Porosity refers to how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture.
- Low Porosity: Hair repels water and is slow to dry. Products may sit on the surface.
- Medium Porosity: Balances moisture well and is easier to manage.
- High Porosity: Absorbs moisture quickly but can lose it just as fast, often feeling dry.
Test: Drop a clean strand of hair into a glass of water. If it floats, your hair is low porosity; if it sinks, it’s high porosity.

3. Hair Density
This measures how many strands you have per square inch of scalp.
- Low Density: Sparse or thin appearance.
- Medium Density: Neither too thick nor too sparse.
- High Density: full and thick-looking hair.
Check: Part your hair and observe how much scalp is visible.
4. Hair Thickness
Hair thickness is the diameter of each strand. It can be fine, medium, or thick.
- Fine Hair: Thin strands prone to breakage.
- Medium Hair: versatile and less fragile.
- Thick Hair: coarse and durable but may require more care to manage.
